Timo Aho Volume

28.10.–20.11.2022

Timo Aho’s first large-scale solo exhibition Volume at Galleria Sculptor is an exploration of a world where the border between real and imagined is blurred. Throughout the works, Aho considers mundane and familiar materials from the urban environment combining them with plant-like sculptures that encapsulate ideas of technology-driven control and the visual language of consumer societies. The sculptures in the exhibition merge with the spatial and sonic dimensions of Galleria Sculptor and are specifically designed for this space.

Light and communication determine the rhythm of life, activities, and mood. Especially in an urban environment where living is becoming increasingly disconnected from the cycle of nature. Artificial lights have isolated urban life forms from the natural rhythm, the seasons and from the experience of the starry skies thus, expanding the gap between humans and nature. Aho is questioning the limitations led by our constructed surroundings; the Illuminated advertisements, noises of the city and information channelled through various platforms that are very much part of everyday life experiences.

Volume is an ambiguous concept. The exhibition acts as a catalyst for reflections on the contemporary world and its phenomena. The exhibition condenses something that defines being, actions and the present moment – it is simultaneously playful, ominous, and bizarre.

The exhibition is supported by Art Promotion Centre Finland and Oscar Öflunds Stiftelse.
