Timo Heino Fragile Things

3.10.–26.10.2025

The works in the exhibition Fragile Things by Timo Heino includes elements originating from plants, animals, humans, as well as synthetic, organic and undefined materials, which are brought together in ways that align, mix, intertwine, blend and merge with one another. Heino has gathered these materials from his everyday surroundings such as grocery stores, wastelands, forests, gas stations, flea markets, clothing shops, sports stores, pet supply stores and trash bins. These works can be approached as three dimensional still images that assemble thoughts, memories and dreams, all rooted in lived experience that stretches back to the distant reaches of childhood. At the same time, the physical presence and substance of the works arise from an external world that exists independently of the artist. Through these multi-material still images, Heino expresses his feelings of sorrow and loss, as well as worry and fear, tempered by a sense of absurd humor. Confronting these emotions is important as we search for less contradictory ways of living and acting in the world.

Timo Heino (b.1962, Tampere), is a sculptor and Doctor of Fine Arts who lives and works in Helsinki. In his art, Heino explores the material world and our existence within it as physical, sensory and embodied beings. His sculptures embody both the tangible reality of the material world and its constant transformation, such as the processes of growth and decay.

Heino has held numerous exhibitions annually for more than thirty years, including galleries Artek, Anhava, and Sculptor, Helsinki Art Museum, Sara Hildén Art Museum, Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Tampere Art Museum, Wäinö Aaltonen Museum, Pori Art Museum, RBS Gallery in London and Pinacoteca do Estado in São Paulo, Brazil. His works are included in the collections of Kiasma, Helsinki Art Museum, Espoo Museum of Modern Art and Sara Hildén Art Museum. Heino has also completed several public artworks.

The exhibition has been supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
