Visit to the Abandoned Marble Quarry in Vuosaari
Saturday 8 November 2-3 pm.
Marble in Helsinki? Yes!
Few people know this, but there are marble deposits in Finland, and one of them is right here in Helsinki, in Vuosaari.
As part of the Cooked Marble exhibition, artist Mireia c. Saladrigues will host a visit to an abandoned marble quarry to explore the unique characteristics of local marble, learn about its history of extraction, when the quarry closed, and what the marble was used for. We’ll also take a closer look at the rocks on site, including some that show signs of weathering and degradation, especially those that have been exposed to fire for unknown reasons.
Accessibility: The path to the quarry is a broad, sandy road. Access into the abandoned quarry is limited, but the site can be viewed clearly from above, along the main road. The event is held in English. The event is free of charge and open to everyone.
The participants are not insured by the organiser.
Meeting point at 2pm:
