New visual identity of the Association of Finnish Sculptors and Galleria Sculptor

Graphic designers Hanna Kahranaho and Pauliina Vuorinen (Guilty Designers Club) have designed the new visual identity of the Association of Finnish Sculptors and Galleria Sculptor. The renewal includes new logos and a redesign of the sculptors.fi website, as well as updates of the new visual identity to newsletters and social media channels

The designers’ concept for the logo, where Galleria Sculptor’s letter S is placed like a sculpture on a pedestal of the Association’s (Kuvanveistäjäliitto) letter K, was finalised by type designer Eino Korkala. Korkala thought that the idea of a combined logo was excellent and further developed the logo into a three-dimensional form. The logos can be used as well individually. The Association’s former stamp logo, depicting a moose head figurine, was also updated and will be used in official materials that require a stamp. The original stamp logo is based on the Pro Sculptura medal designed by sculptors Heikki Varja and Kauko Räsänen in 1960, which depicts a Stone Age sculpture of a moose head and its tools.

The main colours of the new visual identity are a strong and bright cobalt blue, a fresh lemon yellow, and a warm clay white background colour. Two main fonts, Noe and Scto Grotesk, both designed by award-winning, Helsinki-Berlin-based type foundry and graphic design studio Schick Toikka, are used in all communication materials. The Noe font, which is expressive yet classic, is itself like a small sculpture.

Designers Hanna Kahranaho and Pauliina Vuorinen describe the renewal of the Association of Finnish Sculptors’ visual identity as a dream project: ‘It has been rewarding to work with an organisation with a deep understanding of art and design. The end result always moved in a better direction based on our discussions.”

The technical implementation of the website was done by Jani Paasonen (Design on Demand). In connection with the renewal, the aim was to improve the website’s user features and to include current issues related to the Association´s activities and projects. The event calendar is a new channel for members to inform about their current exhibitions, and for example, the release of public artworks.

“We find the renewed visual identity fresh and modern, but timeless. Working with the graphic designers and the technical designer has been a great, fun and educational process for all of us,” says Tiina Veräjänkorva, Executive Director at the Association of Finnish Sculptors.
