“My odyssey with sculpture’s and mythologies’ structures has led me to a place, or preferably to a space, which I have tried to define more specifically within my works.

A loose motif for the exhibition was paradise. The winding path of my practice has taken another route, towards new unknows. Some echoes of the paradise myths might still linger in my work.

The exhibition consists of sculptures and drawings. The material of the sculptures is wood.”

Mikael Pohjola (b. 1962, St. Gallen, Switzerland) grew up and studied law in Helsinki 1983–1988. In 1988 Pohjola started studying in the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. He graduated from the Department of painting in 1992. Pohjola’s first exhibitions consisted of paintings and drawing, but little by little his works began to change towards three-dimensional forms. From the late 1990’s he has worked as a sculptor. At the same time Pohjola moved away from Helsinki and has been working on the countryside ever since.

In his work, Pohjola often uses numerous different materials: wood, metal, glass and also readymade objects. Pohjola has held many solo exhibitions, the latest at the Forum Box Gallery in Helsinki, 2018. He has also participated in various group exhibitions and is represented in several collections.

The exhibition has been supported by The Finnish Cultural Foundation and Alfred Kordelin Foundation.
