Jyrki Siukonen

27.9.–20.10.2024

Welcome to the exhibition opening on Thursday 26 September at 5–7 pm! The artist is present at the gallery on Sunday 20 October between 2–4 pm.

Two objects consisting of 24 pieces, every piece divided into three – that makes 144 in total.

13 holes in each piece, 1872 in total. To be brought to the exhibition space and assembled with cable ties. In addition, something rotating.

Discussing art is not always easy. Asking a geometric object for its purpose is even more demanding: why do you exist?

Here they are, after all, on view and present in the white cube of art. Taking and creating space. In addition, something rotating.

Now, nothing is “studied” or “addressed”. Just existing. Being made to exist. Then moving away.

That is the purpose of art in a gallery.

The artist wants to say that his exhibition consists of two sculptures made of pieces of sawn plywood and something rotating.

The exhibition is supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation. The Finnish Heritage Agency has supported the payment of artist’s exhibition fee.

Jyrki Siukonen (b. 1959) is a visual artist and researcher. He has worked with conceptual art and sculpture since 1982 and held over 50 solo exhibitions in Finland and abroad. Siukonen’s art centers around making and building by hand – a theme he has also articulated in his book Vasara ja hiljaisuus (2011). Like most sculptors, Siukonen suffers a lack of storage space and feels anxiety over the loss of biodiversity.
