Joey Holder The Cryptid Hunter

2.8.–23.8.2024

A cryptid is a creature that may or may not exist. Unproven by science, and chronicled through anecdotal stories passed down through word of mouth, here tales of such mythological creatures have captured our imagination for centuries, and typically reflect our innermost fears and desires. This exhibition houses an eerie realm of AI-generated entities, often grotesque and distorted, populating an unseen graveyard on the internet. These digital apparitions resemble the legendary cryptids whose existence thrives on collective belief and the blurring of reality and fiction.

The Cryptid Hunter is Joey Holder’s first solo exhibition in Finland and part of her ‘Cryptid’ project. The project has previously been exhibited at Art Basel (Paris+) and X Museum (Beijing), this is a new installation created especially for Galleria Sculptor in Helsinki. Holder’s work has been shown internationally at exhibitions including Harvard Museum of Natural History, Athens Biennale, London’s Design Museum, Biennale of Sydney, Transmediale & Venice Biennale. She has been featured in publications including  New York Times, Artforum, Frieze and The Guardian.

The Finnish Heritage Agency has supported the payment of artist’s exhibition fee.
