Riikka Keränen

To Burn / To Return

-

Welcome to the opening reception on Thursday 4 August from 5–7 pm!

Riikka Keränen will create to Galleria Sculptor a sculpture installation made of clay, sand, and straw. The technique she uses in her sculptures resamples of traditional clay construction technique, in which clay layers are plastered on top of a straw-filled wall frame. The sculptures are inspired by the ways in which different fungi and plants grow and how they take their place in the world according to processes of overlapping, intertwining, and stratifying. The exhibition reflects, among other things, warming, heat, and desire.

Riikka Keränen (b.1984) is a visual artist and mixed worker living in Ristijärvi, Kainuu. Keränen graduated as a visual artist from Kankaanpää Art School in 2010. Her artistic practice is much about playing and thinking with hands both as creating a dialogue with the material spectrum of the world. In her practice, Keränen reflects humans’ and other organisms’ relationship to time and the surrounding world.

The exhibition has been supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Arts Promotion Center of Finland.
